If you travel to the city
Genoa is the place where neighborhoods matter the most: the historic centre, Porto Antico, Mercato Orientale, urban seaside and residential areas give very different experiences.
Many guides talk about pesto, focaccia, farinata and fish without explaining the really useful point: in which part of the trip is it best to eat, in which area, at what pace and in which type of restaurant. In Liguria this changes a lot. A good breakfast can save a day of trains or trails; a poorly chosen lunch can break the rhythm of a visit; a well-thought-out dinner can become as much a part of the memory of the trip as the landscape itself.
Genoa is the place where neighborhoods matter the most: the historic centre, Porto Antico, Mercato Orientale, urban seaside and residential areas give very different experiences.
In the west and in the Tigullio, days with a light breakfast, simple lunch, aperitif or dinner near the base and a few unnecessary trips work best.
Cinque Terre, Camogli, Portofino and small towns in the East do better with short breaks and a final dinner in the most comfortable base.
In Liguria breakfast is not a formality. The morning focaccia, the local bakery, the break before taking a train or setting off on a path have a real impact on the balance of the day. At lunch it is often best to simplify: bakery, quick table, small restaurant well placed on the route or beach break without taking too long. The aperitif works very well on seaside walks, in readable squares and in villages that lighten up at sunset. Dinner, on the other hand, pays more when it coincides with the base where you sleep or with a location where the return is not complicated.
This logic avoids two typical errors. The first is to waste the best hour of the landscape by closing yourself at the table for too long in the wrong place. The second is to leave the main meal to the hunger of the moment, ending up in poorly chosen places only out of urgency. Eating well in Liguria also means distributing energy well.
If the stay is urban, it makes sense to concentrate the gastronomic part in the areas where the city is liveliest and most readable. If the trip is seaside, the priority becomes comfort: easy breaks, simple returns and dinners close to the evening walk. If the trip revolves around villages, paths or trains, it is better to lighten the lunch and give more space to the dinner. For families, groups and travelers with slow times, the wait, the number of seats and the predictability of the service are also very important.
For this reason, a good rule is to choose the base and type of day first, then the table. If you want to complete the picture, use this page together with Where to sleep, Food and drink and Itineraries.
Better are places close to the base, with legible service and meals that don't require you to make big detours between the sea, walking and returning.
They can push more on panoramic aperitifs, slow dinners and evening villages, but it is still advisable to avoid complicated returns or tables too late after full days.
A strong breakfast, quick lunch and dinner at the base are often the best combination to keep the landscape and energy together.
Larger cities and bases become stronger, because they allow you to combine museum, market, café and dinner without bad weather disrupting the program.

Genova It is the most complete place for those who love alternating markets, bakeries, pastry shops, traditional cuisine and different neighbourhoods. Camogli, Santa Margherita and nearby Levante they work very well for aperitifs and dinners with a strong landscape component. Ponente and seaside bases they are more suitable for simple and continuous days, in which the food accompanies the sea instead of interrupting it. Cinque Terre they require more selection: here the food must serve the program, not complicate it.
This is not a ranking of the best places ever. And a map of use: understand which area works best for the type of day you have decided to experience.
For the urban side it is best to start from Visit Genoa, which helps to understand neighborhoods, markets and city heritage. For the regional framework it remains useful My Liguria. If the trip passes through the Cinque Terre, always keep the Cinque Terre National Park, because paths, access and timetables also affect meals.
For the complete picture, pair this page with Food and drink, Where to sleep and Reservations and useful sites. In Liguria, eating well almost always depends on where you sleep, how you move and how much you have lightened your schedule.
