Portovenere closes off the Gulf of La Spezia with a row of tall, narrow houses, the «palazzata», painted in warm colours and facing the harbour like a wall. At the tip, on a spur of rock above the open sea, stands the Gothic church of San Pietro with its black-and-white stripes; just below is the grotto from which, so they say, Lord Byron swam across to the other side of the gulf.
Since 1997, together with the Cinque Terre and the islands of Palmaria, Tino and Tinetto, it has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A few minutes by boat take you to Palmaria, with its trails and coves; the municipality also includes the villages of Le Grazie, with a Roman villa, and Fezzano.
