Province of La Spezia

Varese Ligure

Varese Ligure has one of the most unusual villages in Liguria: the Borgo Rotondo, built by the Fieschi in the 14th century as a circular market square enclosed by arcaded houses, next to their castle. It is one of the Borghi più belli d’Italia and the largest municipality in the province.

The valley around is known for organic farming, with cheese and meat from free-range livestock, and Varese was among the first municipalities in Europe to obtain environmental certification. Just outside the village, the Grecino bridge crosses the Vara in a single humpback arch.
