Santo Stefano di Magra lies where the Vara flows into the Magra, at the junction of the motorways to Genoa, Parma and Tuscany. The centre has grown on the plain, while on the hill of Ponzano Superiore a medieval village looks out over the valley.
Among its curiosities are Villa Pratola, the parish church of San Michele Arcangelo and a museum of old public transport, with vintage buses, trolleybuses and trams. Along the river runs the Montemarcello-Magra-Vara nature park.
