Riomaggiore is the first of the Cinque Terre villages coming from La Spezia: colourful tower houses climb both sides of the little valley of the stream, now covered by the main street, and run down to the Marina, where boats are hauled up the slipway. The municipality also includes Manarola, perched on the rocks, which at Christmas has a huge nativity scene made of lights on the hillside.
Between the two villages runs the Via dell’Amore, the clifftop path reopened in 2024 after lengthy works. The terraces around are planted with the grapes for Cinque Terre wine and Sciacchetrà, the local sweet raisin wine.
