Vernazza is the natural harbour of the Cinque Terre: its square opens straight onto the sea, with boats pulled up on the shore, the church of Santa Margherita d’Antiochia a few steps from the water and the tower of the Doria castle keeping watch above. There are no cars in the village, and in the evening, when the last visitors’ trains have left, it falls almost silent.
The municipality also includes Corniglia, the only one of the five villages that does not touch the sea: it sits on a headland a hundred metres up and is reached from the station by the Lardarina, a stairway of almost four hundred steps. Clifftop paths link Vernazza with Monterosso and Corniglia.
