Albenga is the city of a hundred towers: its flat, compact old town is dotted with red-brick medieval towers and holds one of the oldest monuments in Liguria, the 5th-century early Christian baptistery, its mosaics still in place. Nearby are the cathedral of San Michele, the civic museum and the Roman Naval Museum, with amphorae recovered from a ship that sank off the coast.
Around the town spreads the plain, a huge vegetable garden by the sea, where violet asparagus, artichokes and trombetta courgettes grow. Off the beach lies the island of Gallinara, a nature reserve.
