Albisola Superiore and neighbouring Albissola Marina are the capitals of Ligurian ceramics: workshops have been shaping clay here for centuries, and the Manlio Trucco museum tells their story. The different spellings, with one «s» or two, are said to go back to a transcription error made in 1915.
The area includes the remains of the Roman villa of Alba Docilia, the 18th-century Villa Gavotti with its park, and several beaches, both free and with facilities. The historic centre lies a little inland, while the seaside is in the hamlet of Albisola Capo.
