Zuccarello

Zuccarello is a village of a single street, lined with medieval arcades, closed by a gate at each end and reached by a humpback stone bridge over the Neva. It was the capital of a small marquisate from the 14th to the 17th century and is one of the Borghi più belli d’Italia.

In the castle, now in ruins on the hill, Ilaria del Carretto was born, the noblewoman portrayed by Jacopo della Quercia in his famous tomb in Lucca. The village also has the church of San Bartolomeo and the Marquises’ palace.
