Altare is the glass village: since the Middle Ages its master glassblowers have practised their craft here and taken it across half of Europe. The Glass Art Museum, in an Art Nouveau villa, gathers their finest pieces.

The village lies at 400 metres next to the Colle di Cadibona, the pass that conventionally separates the Alps from the Apennines, a quarter of an hour from Savona. The patron saint is Saint Roch, on 16 August.
