Borgomaro is the main village of the Maro valley, the upper part of the Impero valley, about fifteen kilometres from Imperia. Its houses follow the stream and gather around the square; the remains of the Castello del Maro still stand in the surrounding area.
In summer, the natural pools formed by the stream are a cool spot for a swim or a picnic. The village has a few restaurants and some holiday homes.
