The city of flowers and of the song festival, with La Pigna, the old town on the hill.
Sanremo is the city of flowers and of the Italian song festival, which since 1951 has brought it into homes all over Italy every winter. The Art Nouveau casino, the palm-lined Corso Imperatrice and the onion-domed Russian church recall the Belle Époque, when aristocrats from half of Europe spent their winters here; Alfred Nobel lived out his last years in the villa that now bears his name.
The oldest part is La Pigna, the medieval quarter of alleys and covered passages climbing towards the sanctuary of the Madonna della Costa. Also worth seeing are the Santa Tecla fort by the harbour and, a few kilometres away, Bussana Vecchia, the village abandoned after the 1887 earthquake and reborn as an artists’ colony. Italo Calvino spent his youth here.
