Imperia is a twin town: it was created in 1923 by merging Porto Maurizio and Oneglia, two rival towns that still have different characters. Porto Maurizio climbs its headland with the Parasio, the old quarter of alleys and stairways, the loggias of the Santa Chiara convent looking out to sea and the great basilica of San Maurizio. Oneglia is more commercial, with the arcades of Calata Cuneo and restaurants along the harbour.
Olive oil is at home here: the Olive Tree Museum tells the story of its cultivation in Liguria. Also worth a visit are the Naval Museum and Villa Grock, home of the famous Swiss clown and now a museum of clowns. Every two years in September, the harbour of Porto Maurizio hosts the Vele d’Epoca classic yacht regatta.
