Triora

The village of witches, remembered for its late 16th-century trials.

Triora is known as the witches’ village: between 1587 and 1589 it was the scene of one of the best-known witch trials in Italy, and the memory is still everywhere, from the ethnographic and witchcraft museum to the Cabotina, the ruins where, according to legend, the witches used to meet.

The village, at 780 metres, is a tangle of stone alleys and covered passages. The municipality is huge and reaches the French border, with hamlets such as Realdo, Verdeggia and Monesi, and is part of the Ligurian Alps nature park. Be sure to try the local bread, pane di Triora.
