Camogli is the seaside village everyone pictures when thinking of Liguria: tall, narrow houses painted in warm colours, a small harbour full of boats, and the basilica and Dragonara castle perched on the rocks. In the 19th century it was called the town of a thousand white sailing ships, after its shipowners’ fleet, and the Gio Bono Ferrari maritime museum keeps that memory alive.
Boats and footpaths leave from here for San Fruttuoso, the abbey hidden in a cove of the Portofino headland, and for Punta Chiappa. Two dates to remember: the fish festival in May, with its giant frying pan, and Stella Maris on the first Sunday of August, with a procession of boats.
