Mele lies in the Leira valley behind Voltri, on the road up to the Turchino pass, and for centuries it was one of Liguria’s paper-making centres, with dozens of mills along the stream. Above the village runs the Gorsexio motorway viaduct, one of the highest bridges in Italy.
In the woods around are the Geremia fort, an old ice house and the Pietra di Issel. The village has a few trattorias and a couple of rooms.
