Sestri Levante is built on an isthmus joining the mainland to a small headland, which gives it two seas: on one side the Baia del Silenzio, a sheltered beach among colourful houses, on the other the Baia delle Favole, the Bay of Fairy Tales, named in honour of Hans Christian Andersen, who stayed here in the 19th century. Every year the town awards a prize for fairy tales in his name.
From the centre a trail through pines and holm oaks leads to Punta Manara, with views as far as the Cinque Terre. In town you can visit the Rizzi gallery and the archaeological museum; there is a wide choice of hotels and several campsites.
