Portofino is the most photographed harbour in Liguria: narrow, colourful houses crowd around the little square and the boats, enclosed by the green hills of the headland. Since the late 19th century it has drawn European aristocracy and today the international jet set, but climb a few steps and the silence returns.
From the piazzetta, walk up to the church of San Giorgio and Castello Brown, with views over the Gulf of Tigullio, and on to the lighthouse at Punta del Capo. The trails of the Portofino park lead to San Fruttuoso and Camogli; alternatively, take the ferry. Out of season, early in the morning, you will have the village almost to yourself.
