Rapallo is the largest town on the Tigullio, with its castle on the sea closing off the palm-lined promenade and a centre of alleys and arcades. Its name is linked to two treaties signed here after the First World War, in 1920 and 1922, and the American poet Ezra Pound lived here from the 1920s to the 1940s.
A cable car climbs in a few minutes to the sanctuary of Montallegro, at over 600 metres, with a view over the whole gulf. In town you can visit the lace museum, devoted to bobbin lace, and the medieval bridge known as Hannibal’s bridge; inland stand the ruins of the Valle Christi monastery.
