Masone lies at 400 metres in the Stura valley, just beyond the Turchino pass, the old road climbing from Voltri towards Piedmont. The village once lived on ironworks and paper mills, as the Andrea Tubino civic museum explains, and the ruins of the Savoi paper mill still stand by the stream.

The woods around have trails and waterfalls, such as the Cascata del Serpente. There are a few trattorias and a mountain hut.
